WHY YOU SHOULDN’T SKIP DENTAL CHECK-UPS

Your dentist does more than just clean your teeth! In addition to regular cleanings, your dentist performs important preventative care and check-ups that protect your health in the long run.

How Often Should You See Your Dentist?

At a minimum, to maintain your dental health, you should visit your dentist twice annually for cleanings, and receive X-rays once per year.

Dental check-ups are extremely important to maintain to have optimal oral health. However, a lot of people still end up skipping out on their regular dental check-up appointments.

Skipping a dentist appointment is not good. A dental visit is essential to keeping your teeth clean beyond what normal brushing can do. The dentist is also responsible for any little problems before they become big ones. Remember, even if you only skip one appointment, that means you might be waiting 6 months until your next one. That’s 6 more months of plaque buildup and potential tooth decay.

1. Examination

When someone misses their dental checkup appointment, they are missing out on a thorough examination. An examination is extremely important to ensure that nothing out of the ordinary occurs within the mouth. If a person doesn’t have their mouth regularly examined by a dental professional, it puts them at risk because most people aren’t able to detect abnormalities like a dental professional can. The longer you wait, the more risk you have of experiencing a cavity, tooth decay, or a more serious health issue.

    2. Thorough cleaning

Plaque is building up all the time, even if you’re a thorough brusher. Regular cleanings and checkups at the dentist remove that build-up of plaque to keep your teeth healthy. During a dental checkup, a patient receives thorough cleaning of their teeth and gums. This is important to have because the average person doesn’t clean their teeth as thoroughly as a dental professional can, so having them cleaned twice a year will ensure that they stay in good shape.

    3. Fluoride treatments

A dental checkup appointment sometimes requires fluoride treatment for the patient. This helps to remineralize the teeth and strengthen the surface so having them done is crucial. Most people can’t go and buy pure fluoride at the store so be sure to get to the dental checkup so that fluoride can keep the teeth healthy and strong.

    4. Advice

Going to the dentist for a checkup is important so that a patient can ask for advice regarding anything that they might be concerned about. People often have questions about their oral health and may not know the answers. It’s best to talk with a dental professional about these things and missing an appointment won’t allow for that.

    5. X-Rays

Your dentist takes X-rays of your teeth to look for structural deficiencies, conducts checks of your gums and tongue for indicators of disease, and examines the state of your enamel for wear and vulnerabilities. If you’re consistently skipping a dentist appointment, you could be at an increased risk of tooth decay, bad breath, gum disease, infection, or even cancer. X-rays are sometimes done at dental checkup appointments to ensure that the teeth haven’t shifted or moved over time.

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the dentist, it’s best to get an appointment scheduled as soon as possible. It’s never too late to get a handle on your dental health, and your dentist can help you address any damage or issues that they find to make sure your teeth, gums, and mouth are healthy and happy.
